This book is just so wholesome! I know the first few pages are bloody and gruesome but that is literally just the first few pages to set up the main character. Perhaps I’m just too jaded from reading too many dystopian science fiction stories but I expected things to go badly on so many different occasions throughout this book. And yet even when things seem to go wrong it somehow ends up being alright. The book contains a queer romance but it is not explicit. Makes me want to sit down, have a cinnamon roll and an iced latte. With caramel if they have it. Definitely has that Uncle Iroh’s tea shop and Pai Sho vibe to it.

This is a standalone book so if you, like me, want a sequel you’re out of luck (although a book set in the same universe along the same lines exists).
